One in every eight woman is expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. Many people believe that if their family doesn’t have a history with breast cancer, then they should be fine. However, for every nine women diagnosed with breast cancer, eight of them don’t have any known family history with it. Thankfully, early detection allows for a nearly 100% 5-year survival rate. At Women’s Health of Central Virginia, we are proud to introduce you to our brand new Breast Imaging Center, allowing you to get 3D mammograms which are superior when it comes to early detection of breast cancer. We opened the doors of our new Breast Imaging Center at the beginning of July and are now accepting patients!
Benefits of 3D Mammography
Of course, one of the main benefits of 3D mammograms is a much higher chance at detecting breast cancer early on. Here’s a more in-depth list of some of the benefits:
- Earlier detection of small breast cancers that may be hidden during digital mammography
- Greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities
- Fewer unnecessary biopsies or additional tests
- Greater likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors, which occur in 15% of breast cancer patients
- Clearer images of dense breast tissue
Annual Mammograms
It is highly recommended that women begin receiving annual mammograms starting at age 40. Even if you can’t yet feel the changes occurring due to breast cancer, mammograms can still detect these changes up to two years prior to you or your physician being able to physically feel them. And, as mentioned earlier, early detection does wonders for survival rate.
